Gan-dama & Waribishi Reverse Lookup and Total Tool

日本語 | English

This tool converts the weight of sinkers between g (gram), oz (ounce), and go (号, the same as monme 匁). You can enter fractions, and the closest gan-dama (ガン玉, split shot) and waribishi (割りビシ, split sinker) sizes are shown at the same time. What you enter is processed only in your browser.

The ratings in this tool (G1, B, 2B, and so on) are Japanese gan-dama (ガン玉) ratings. They differ from the split shot sizes used in other countries.

Choose gan-dama (ガン玉, split shot) and waribishi (割りビシ, split sinkers) in order, starting from the side nearest the rod tip, to see the total weight. You can mix gan-dama and waribishi. It starts with 3 pieces, and you can add up to 5 with "Add one piece".

The total is the sum of the measured average weight of each size. It may differ slightly from a total you weigh yourself.

Weights are measured averages and may differ by maker. The measurement date is not recorded. Please use them as a guide.

How to Use

This tool finds combinations of gan-dama (ガン玉, split shot) and waribishi (割りビシ, split sinkers). Use the tabs at the top to switch between “Total,” “Find by weight,” “From float rating,” “Weight to add,” “Buy fewer sizes,” “Weight chart,” and “Stock & Code.” You can also switch tabs with the left and right arrow keys.

Total: Add Up the Weight of the Sinkers You Choose

  1. Choose a gan-dama or waribishi size for each position, starting from the side nearest the rod tip. You can mix gan-dama and waribishi.
  2. It starts with 3 pieces. Use “Add one piece” to go up to 5, and “Remove the last piece” to remove them one at a time.
  3. The total weight is shown in g, oz, and go (号) / monme (匁). The weight of each piece and the running total are also shown in a table.

Find by Weight: Find Combinations from a Weight

  1. Enter the weight you want to match in the “Weight” field. In “Unit,” choose g (gram) or go (号) / monme (匁).
  2. In “Type of sinker,” choose whether to use gan-dama, waribishi, or both. Also choose the “Maximum number of pieces.”
  3. The 3 combinations closest to the weight are shown, starting with the smallest difference.

From Float Rating: Find Combinations for Your Float

Enter the rating marked on your float (such as G2 or 3B). You can also enter a waribishi size (such as XXS or XS), a go number such as 0.5 go or 1 go, or a weight such as 1.2 g. Full-width characters and lowercase also work. The 3 combinations closest to that buoyancy are shown, starting with the smallest difference. Options marked “+” are heavier than the float rating, and the float may sink.

Weight to Add: Make Up the Missing Weight

  1. Enter the float rating (such as G2 or 3B) or a weight (such as 0.5 go or 1.2 g).
  2. In “Sinkers already attached,” choose the sinkers that are already on the line. Leave unused fields as “None.”
  3. The missing weight and 3 combinations to add are shown. You can also choose the type of sinker and the maximum number of pieces. If the attached sinkers are already heavier, the difference is shown instead.

Buy Fewer Sizes: Reduce the Number of Sizes You Buy

These tables show how to make the weights of many sizes from just a few sizes, so you do not have to buy every size. The top table is for gan-dama (weights close to float ratings G5 to 5B), and the bottom table is for waribishi. Choose the “Number of sizes to buy” (2, 3, or 4) and the “Maximum pieces for one weight” (3 or 5). The defaults are 2 sizes and 3 pieces.

Only combinations whose total is within 0.03 g or 6% of the target weight (whichever is larger) are listed. Sizes that cannot be made are shown under “Sizes that cannot be made.” The “Shopping guide (pieces)” table assumes a bag of 10 pieces. For each size, it shows the “Minimum pieces needed” and “Buy when this many are left” (twice the minimum).

Weight Chart: Compare Gan-dama and Waribishi

The top table shows the waribishi that weigh about the same as each gan-dama (a combination of 1 to 3 pieces). The bottom table shows the gan-dama that weigh about the same as each waribishi (also 1 to 3 pieces). “None” means the difference is more than 0.03 g or 15% of the weight, whichever is larger. The list below shows the float ratings (G10 to 6B, and 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 go) and their weights.

Stock & Code: Your Sinkers and Save Code

  • Sinkers you have: Check the sizes you own. “Find by weight,” “From float rating,” and “Weight to add” then search only with the checked sizes. “Total” and “Buy fewer sizes” are not affected.
  • Save code: This turns your current settings into a short code. Paste it somewhere, and enter it next time to return to the same state. What you enter is not sent to our site.

Copy and Print

  • Copy result: In “Total,” “Find by weight,” “From float rating,” “Weight to add,” and “Buy fewer sizes,” copies the result on the screen as text.
  • Print: In “Buy fewer sizes” and “Weight chart,” prints the screen on a white background.

Reading the Screen

  • Total: The sum of the measured average weight of each size. It may differ slightly from a total you weigh yourself.
  • Options: Shown as Option 1, Option 2, and Option 3, starting with the smallest difference. In each option, the pieces are listed from the rod tip side, heaviest first. Change the order to suit your rig.
  • “Almost exact” and similar labels: The combination weighs almost the same as the target.
  • “+” and “−”: The difference from the target. “+” means heavier than the target, and “−” means lighter.
  • “None”: There is no close combination.
  • “Not possible” and “Sizes that cannot be made”: With the chosen number of sizes and pieces, a weight close to that size cannot be made.
  • Size marks: Waribishi sizes are XXS (極小), XS (小々), S (小), M (中), L (大), XL (大々), XXL (特大), 1 go, 1.5 go, 2 go, and 3 go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are go and monme the same?

Yes. Go (号) is the same as monme (匁), and 1 go (1 monme) is 3.75 g.

Is the gan-dama G1 the same weight as a 1 go sinker?

No. The go marks on gan-dama (G1, G2, and so on) are different from the go in the go table (1 go = 3.75 g). The gan-dama G1 weighs 0.40 g.

Can I enter the Japanese size names, such as 少々?

Yes. You can enter the waribishi sizes in Japanese (極小, 小々, 小, 中, 大, 大々, 特大) or in letters (XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL). 少々 is treated the same as 小々 (XS).

How were the weights of gan-dama and waribishi measured?

They were measured. We put 10 pieces on a scale and divided the total by 10 to get the weight of one piece. We repeated this 10 times and used the average in the tables. The measurement date is not recorded.

The weights in the tables differ from the label on my product.

Weights differ by maker. Please use them as a guide.

The result differs from the weight I measured.

The weights in this tool are guides based on the measured average weight of one piece of each size. The difference may grow as the number of pieces increases.

Is the save code sent to your site?

No. The code is created and checked only on your screen. A code made before the data was updated may no longer work.

I entered a value, but no result appears.

Check that the field is not empty or 0. Enter a float rating as G1 to G10, B, 2B to 6B, a waribishi size, a go number such as 0.5 go, or a weight such as 1.2 g. If no size is checked in the “Stock & Code” tab, the search cannot run.
